SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Thousands of City Water, Light and Power customers were without power Sunday after severe thunderstorms passed through the area.

The utility company said lightning strikes, wind and heavy rains toppled trees, power poles and power lines, causing power to go out for 7,330 customers in 13 areas across the city's center and northwest of Lake Springfield.

According to CWLP, crews are assessing damage and addressing downed lines where safety concerns are a priority. The company said power will be restored to the largest groups of customers as quickly and safely as possible.

As of 7:45 p.m., there were still 1,828 outages in Sangamon County, according to PowerOutage.com.

Major outage areas included:

  • South Grand Avenue to W. Stanford Avenue between Taylor Avenue and Veterans Parkway approximately
  • GlenAire and Laketown areas near the Stevenson Drive I-72
