CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Mahomet chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is gearing up for its second annual bed build, with a plan to build 150 bed frames for children across Champaign County who are in need.
To date, the Mahomet chapter has delivered nearly 700 beds, but the need is still severe, as its waitlist is over 200 children.Â
On Saturday, over 120 volunteers will join together to assemble the bedframes. But it really started on Friday, with plenty of prep work.Â
Jeff Butcher, a core team member for the chapter, said pre-cutting the wood and setting up some bed slats ahead of time keeps the assembly line flowing smoothly on the big day.
"It'll be crowded, noisy, a lot of dust. Pretty, pretty crazy ... It'll be like a little beehive in here," Butcher said.
Lowe's sponsored the chapter, providing some tools and materials.
The bed build event is also done in partnership with WBGL.
"There is such a need for it. It's something that I think can be easily taken for granted, but we're blessed to get to help this actually happen," said Leah Bice, engagement director at WBGL.
In the weeks following the bed build, volunteers will deliver each bed to a child in Champaign County.Â
"It's just really rewarding to deliver beds and set them up and give the kids a new mattress and new linens and new comforter and new pillows," Butcher said.
The volunteer list for this build is full; they are always accepting donations. Monetary donations can be made online.Â
Bedding donations can be made from its wish list, or in person at the bed build at 4101 Fieldstone Rd in Champaign.
