URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Tango lovers rejoice as the Urbana Tango Week brings its vibrant spirit of Argentine tango to Central Illinois later this month.
CU Tango Music will host the festivities July 21-26 and feature a series of concerts, dance events, jams and community performances spread across local venues.
- Monday will kick off with Tango Movie Night at the Gallery Art Bar.
- Tuesday will feature a Faculty and Guest Concert at the Rose Bowl Tavern.
- Wednesday will bring an Intro to Tango Dance Class at the Urbana Dance Company.
- Thursday invites audiences to the Tango Music Jam at the Rose Bowl Tavern.
- Friday will showcase workshop participants in concert at Urbana Dance Company.
- Saturday begins with Tango for All: A Musical Adventure for Kids at 11 a.m. at the Urbana Free Library, and will conclude with the Showcase Milonga at the Urbana Dance Company, which is a ticketed event.
Each event will start at 8 p.m., and events Monday through Friday will be followed by Tango in the Lot at the Rose Bowl Tavern, offering social dancing and music.
The event aims to be inclusive for all attendees.
“You don’t have to be a dancer or musician to enjoy tango,” said Maxfield Wollam-Fisher, faculty cellist, in a press release. “There’s something magical about the way this music brings people together—whether you're playing, dancing, or just listening.”
CU Tango Music is a nonprofit organization based in Champaign-Urbana dedicated to promoting and preserving the tradition of Argentine tango music.
