Camp Butler National Cemetery honors 10 unaccompanied veterans

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The remains of a local veteran will be interred at Camp Butler National Cemetery after he passed away last year.

Terry Kitchen died on June 15, 2025, at a nursing home in Jacksonville, with no immediate family to claim him.

Through the efforts of his friend John, who was able to provide his DD214, the Morgan County Coroner's office is making sure Kitchen receives the honor he deserves with burial at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.

His interment is scheduled for Friday, April 24, at 10 a.m. at Camp Butler. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.

The coroner's office invites anyone in the area to attend.

"Thought there was no family left to honor Mr. Kitchen, as a decorated United States Navy veteran, he is owed our respect and gratitude."
