COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - One person was airlifted after a crash in Coles County Wednesday morning between a vehicle and a semi pulling tanks containing anhydrous ammonia.

The crash happened on East County Road 1000N/North County Road 500E just after 7 a.m.

The Coles County Sheriff's Department said a car driven by a 70-year-old Mattoon woman had stopped at the intersection and then failed to yield the right of way by proceeding north into the intersection.

Deputies said the vehicle was then struck on the driver’s side by a semi-truck driven by a 26-year-old Mattoon man.

The semi was pulling dual Anhydrous Ammonia trailer tanks.

Both vehicles came to rest in the field northeast of the intersection.

Neither of the anhydrous ammonia tanks sustained damage as a result of the crash, and no hazardous gas was released from the containers.

The 70-year-old woman was flown from the scene by helicopter.

The semi driver was treated and released from the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
