2 killed in Springfield crash identified

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Sangamon County Coroner has identified the two individuals killed in a crash in Springfield early Tuesday morning.

Anthony Carroll, 40, and Christian Markey, 28, both from Springfield were identified as those involved in the fatal crash.

According to the Coroner, Carroll was pronounced dead at the scene and died of injures sustained in the crash. Markey was transported by EMS from the scene and was taken to Springfield Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

Illinois State Police were called to Illinois Route 4 at Jefferson Street at 11:56 p.m. Monday for a crash.

Troopers said a purple Buick was going south on Illinois Route 4 and was stopped at a stop light. A red Hyundai was also going south, failed to slow down, and hit the back of the Buick, troopers said.

Police said, the Buick, driven by Carroll, caught fire.

The deaths remain under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Illinois State Police.

All lanes reopened at just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.
