CHAMPAIGN - The American Red Cross has taken steps to prevent house fires, in Illinois.
The group says its home fire campaign has saved 14 lives in central and southern Illinois. They have also installed more than 5,000 smoke alarms in those areas and helped more than 1,000 families create fire escape plans.
The Red Cross says smoke alarms should be installed on every floor of your home and in every bedroom.
Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
