DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND)—Danville Firefighters responded to a large building fire on Halloween, near North Jackson Street.
According to Danville Fire, the structure was a large "taxpayer"-type building containing a business on the first floor and apartments on the second floor.
Fire crews said that when they arrived, they saw a large amount of smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the building, with flames visible from the roof.
The crews extinguished the fire using several hose lines. They upgraded the fire to a third alarm assignment and brought in 15 off-duty fire department personnel.
There were two people located in the building next to the building on fire on the first floor. Fire crews rescued and removed the people due to moderate smoke conditions. EMS said they were not hurt and were later released.
The fire was put out by 9:25 a.m.
Due to the building's conditions, fire crews contacted a demolition crew. Owen's Excavating responded to manage the demolition.
DFD said the property where the fire happened consisted of three separate buildings connected by various walkways and shared roofing components.
They added that all three buildings have been vacant for over a decade and are currently owned by the City of Danville. One of the buildings, the former Model Star Laundry, previously suffered a partial collapse.
