DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — The Danville Fire Department said a fire they put out on November 1 had no working smoke detectors in the residence.
DFD battled a fire in the 1200 block of Saratoga Drive on Friday, November 1, around 8:20 a.m.
DFD said that upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire in the back of the house. One person and two dogs were reported as being out of the house and safe.
The fire crews found fire in a bedroom and in the southeast corner of the house, with high heat and dense smoke. They upgraded the fire to a second alarm and brought in 7 more off-duty fire personnel to assist.
The fire was put out around midnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
DFD said no working smoke detectors were present. The estimated damage is around $15,500. No one was hurt.
DFD emphasizes the importance of working smoke detectors, reminding people to check their smoke detectors when they change their clocks during daylight saving time change.
"With Daylight Savings Time ending this weekend and when setting your clocks back an hour, fire personnel would like to remind everyone to replace their batteries in their smoke detectors, test their detectors, and/or replace their detectors if necessary. Detectors should be installed on every level of the home, outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom. 60% of home fire deaths occur in homes without a working smoke detector. Carbon Monoxide detectors in the home are also highly recommended."
