CLINTON, Ill. (WAND) - A man who was arrested after his wife was found dead in Clinton was denied pretrial release.

Clinton police were called out at 5:27 p.m. Friday for a welfare check. That led to a missing/endangered persons alert for 34-year-old Cassandra N. Smith of Clinton.

On Saturday, the Clinton Police Department requested help from the Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigations. Search warrants were executed on multiple properties and vehicles as part of the investigation.

At 7:15 p.m., a vehicle of interest to the investigation was found near Sunrise Ct. in Clinton. The execution of a search warrant led to the discovery of a body, confirmed later to be that of Cassandra Smith.

The victim’s husband, Nicholas Smith, 35, of Clinton, was taken into custody on charges of Obstructing Justice, Resisting a Peace Officer and Concealment of a Death. Smith was taken to the DeWitt County Jail, where he is currently being held.

Initial findings indicate Smith died of multiple blunt injuries. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues, police said.

Smith appeared in court on Tuesday and was denied pretrial release.

A status hearing is set for June 1. A trial date was set for Aug. 10.
