DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — This Friday is the annual Spirit of Giving.

Over the past 14 years, 76,520 toys have been donated to the children of central Illinois so they could have a gift to open — all thanks to you.

The Salvation Army in Decatur said the need is great and more than 1,200 families have signed up for holiday assistance.

"We are seeing a greater number than we have ever seen before," said Major Susan Summit.

Community partners have stepped up to help make this a great holiday for children in need. This is the 8th year that Oakwood Tattoo will host its "Toys for Tats" event. The event will take place on Nov. 30 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

People wanting to make a difference should bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at $25 or more with a receipt.

"Ever since the first one we have done we have always appreciated helping our community," said Crimson Ball, shop manager.

Stores like Menards in Forsyth have collected hundreds of toys already for the Spirit of Giving. General Manager, Cory Jacobs, said with the community's help they had already filled three boxes of toys for the drive.

"It's something the whole store gets behind and the whole community as well," he said.

Menards will continue to collect toys until Dec. 11.

The Salvation Army said they need toys for older children, specifically boys. Also, they are taking donations of new wrapping paper and tape to give to families.
