CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)- A 23-year-old male from Champaign has been hospitalized after being shot in the torso.Â
According to Champaign Police, officers were dispatched at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2024, to the 100 block of W. Green Street for a report of a shooting with injuries.
Police said once on-scene, officers located a 23-year-old male victim suffering from a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound and began to administer medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department.
The victim was transported to an area hospital where he remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Police said the initial investigation indicates that the victim was waiting in a store when an unidentified subject approached and attempted to rob him. When the victim was uncooperative, the suspect produced a firearm and fired it, striking the victim in the torso.
Authorities report the subject then fled the area and has not been located at this time. Officers continue to search the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance.
Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department.
No arrests have been made at this time, but the investigation remains ongoing.
