CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - In Champaign, the power of theater is teaching students that anything is possible.

The Champaign Urbana Theatre Company is partnering with the Penguin Project, to put on "Rock of Ages" this weekend. This is their 8th annual production together.

Champaign Urbana Theatre Company & Penguin Project

The Penguin Project is an organization meant to inspire and empower young adults with developmental disabilities to shine on the stage. With a cast of over 30 performers, both the artists and their mentors are taking the stage this weekend to show off their four months of rehearsing.

Artists and mentors work as a team to learn the music and dances to rock out on the stage in front of an audience.

Director Jacki Loewenstein said the performance will be a moving one.

"The kids have their whole hearts in it. I would bring Kleenex — if you’re a human with emotions, you’re going to feel all of them," said Loewenstein. "And your heart will go out to every single one of the students working hard."

Rock of Ages will open Friday at 7 p.m. at Champaign Central High School. The show will continue to run Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here for 10 dollars.
