City council gives OK for building facelift

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – A property in downtown Champaign could soon be home to new businesses.

The property, located at 500 N. Walnut St., includes about 30,000 square feet of space. WAND-TV’s partners at The News-Gazette say developer New Market Commons LLC is considering a series of changes.

The company’s proposed overhaul carries a $4.1 million cost and features proposed spaces for new companies to move in. New Market Commons wants to create a new look for the entire building’s exterior. Champaign’s city council approved the redevelopment on Tuesday.

The North Walnut Street property currently has four tenants.

Tom Harrington, who works for New Market Commons, told the paper food and drink services are interested in leasing potential spaces, along with other types of retail.Â
