Champaign man arrested after foot chase, police say

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A 24-year-old Champaign man was arrested Wednesday after deputies said he ran from a traffic stop and hid a loaded handgun in bushes.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said deputies conducted a traffic stop Wednesday evening for an Illinois Vehicle Code violation.

Deputies said a passenger, later identified as Devon Miles, ran from the vehicle. During a short foot pursuit, deputies saw Miles place an object beneath a bush before he tripped and fell.

Miles was taken into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies recovered a loaded 9mm handgun from the bushes. Authorities said Miles has a prior felony conviction and is not legally allowed to possess a firearm.

Miles was arrested on charges of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, obstructing justice, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken to the Champaign County Jail.
