Race Chapman & Angela Powell

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - We are learning more information about a couple that was arrested after two dead dogs were found in their home.

Decatur police arrested Race Chapman, 24, and Angela Powell, 28, on May 29 after initially being called to the home in the 1000 block of West Decatur St. for a reported burglary.

According to a sworn statement of their arrest, two huskies, Thor and Butterball, were left on their leash for an extended period. Both dogs later died.

The suspects told police the dogs were killed during "a break-in," but police said evidence shows the dogs had been living in poor conditions for some time. Necropsy results showed both dogs died from traumatic injuries to the neck area.

Police also said the couple failed to provide "adequate" food and water to several cats and dogs. The surviving animals were voluntarily relinquished to Macon County Animal Control by the owners.

Chapman and Powell were granted pretrial release and are due back in court Sept. 23.
