DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Decatur police teamed up with the Decatur Jewelry and Pawn in order to keep guns out of the hands of kids.

They're giving away 200 gun locks and 300 safety pamphlets at the police department.

It's been almost a year since a 12-year-old Decatur boy was shot and killed because someone was "playing" with a gun. Perry Lewin, the owner of the pawn shop, was called to pay it forward after hearing about the accidental shooting.

"With gun ownership comes a huge responsibility and accountability," Lewin said.

Research from the U.S. General Accounting Office shows 31 percent of accidental deaths caused by firearms could have been prevented. That's if there was a lock and loading indicator.

"They can take those gun locks home, put them on a gun ... we save one life. We've all won," Lewin said.

To Lewin, one should do everything they can to learn gun safety before and after. Depending on the turnout, Lewin would want to make this an annual event that happens twice a year.Â
