DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — With deer season kicking off, it's important to keep an eye out while driving at dusk.
Illinois State Trooper Jayme Bufford said November is the busiest season for deer-related crashes.
"We're kind of in the middle of the mating season ... usually October, November, December, are the big season where we see the car deer crashes — November being the highest," explained Bufford.
She said it's important to keep the following tips in mind when driving close to dusk:
Be aware of your surroundings.
Scans the sides of the road.
Slow down in Deer Crossing areas.
Look for the eye shine
Prepare for the unexpected.
Don't Veer for Deer.
"Don't veer for the deer, don't try to, you know, swerve, from hitting the deer. But if you do end up hitting a deer, one of the big things is do not get out of your vehicle," said Bufford. "You never know if another crash is going to happen ... Stay inside your vehicle. Because a lot of times people want to get out and check on the deer. And the better thing is just to stay in your car."
If there are any injuries or if you hit a deer, call 911. If the crash happens on the Interstate, you can self-report it on ISP's website.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has also urged safety among hunters using tree stands.
The 2024 firearm deer season dates are Nov. 22-24 and Dec. 5-8.
“Our top priority is ensuring hunters return home safe and unharmed after every hunt,” said Jed Whitchurch, director of IDNR’s Office of Law Enforcement. “We want hunters to enjoy themselves and be successful in the field, but safety must be top of mind at all times.”
Tree stand safety tips include:
Use a fall arrest system that includes a safety harness and follow the manufacturer's guidelines that come with it.
Inspect the tree stand for wear and tear before each use.
Use a haul line to bring up unloaded firearms, bows, and other hunting equipment.
Take a cell phone.
Tell a friend or loved one where you intend to hunt and when you intend to return.
Avoid drug or alcohol use before and during hunting.
