MAROA, Ill. (WAND) – The Chief of Police at the Maroa Police Department has announced his resignation after more than three years of service.

In a resignation letter shared on Facebook, Officer Robert S. Fitzgerald said the decision came with “an extremely heavy heart” as he prepares to leave the department due to his mother’s declining health and other family concerns.

Fitzgerald said he has accepted a position with the Momence Police Department, which will allow him to be closer to his family and provide additional support during this time.

In the letter, Fitzgerald thanked the City of Maroa and his fellow officers for the opportunity to serve the community over the past three and a half years. He also said he remains grateful for the relationships and experiences built during his time with the department.

Fitzgerald closed the message by wishing the department and community the best and said he would always be available to help however he can.
