WASHINGTON (WAND) — As Americans learn of another postal rate increase that will see Forever stamps cost 73 cents each, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) joined a team of senators pushing for change at the U.S. Postal Service.
The lawmakers want to protect jobs while also ensuring good, affordable service.
“We have a vested interest in seeing USPS succeed. Our constituents rely on it for their daily correspondence, bills, lifesaving medications, and sometimes, their livelihood. The U.S. Postal Service is, by law, a fundamental service provided to the people by our government,” wrote the Senators. “It has become clear that under the DFA, USPS is continuing to implement changes that are harmful to Americans and the American businesses that rely on the service. As the Board of Governors, you must step in before further harm is caused.”

Locally, the emphasis has been on preventing the downsizing of mail processing and distribution centers in Champaign and Springfield. Last month, U.S. Representatives Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) and Mary Miller (IL-15) sent a letter to Postmaster Louis DeJoy sharing their concerns that shutting down the distribution center in Champaign could cause a loss of jobs and worsen delivery rates.
The letter points out that Illinois District 2 had some of the lowest on-time delivery rates for both two-day and three-to-five-day delivery options during a three month period last summer.
