CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The Champaign Unit 4 School Board is facing public pressure regarding its decision to start the search for a new superintendent and a permanent principal for Booker T. Washington Elementary.

Many of the comments from the public emphasized the importance of racial justice and equity in the hiring and promotion processes.

Minnie Pearson, President of NAACP Champaign County, stated, "If you are considering replacing Dr. Boozer, which many in this room would view as a mistake, please ensure that diversity remains a priority."

Rebecca Ray, mom of a student, states that BTW deserves a permanent principal, and she has not heard a clear reason why that principal should not be Cecily Thomas.

The board voted 6 to 1 to instruct staff to issue a request for proposals to search firm.

The board will meet again on Thursday at 5 PM to continue discussions on administrative appointments, which were removed from tonight's agenda.
