DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - Danville firefighters had to battle a house fire in frigid temperatures Sunday.
The Danville Fire Department was called out for a fire at 20 Iowa Street at 12:19 p.m. Flames were coming from the vacant house when they arrived. Firefighters searched the house and confirmed no one was inside.
A total of 19 firefighters worked through the evening in extremely cold and icy conditions.
Off-duty firefighters were called back to provide help, and a city bus was brought out and used as a warming center.
Assistant Chief Jerry Sparks said, “The extreme weather conditions presented numerous unique challenges. But, despite multiple falls due to icy conditions, there were no injuries reported.”
Assistant Chief Sparks also noted that fire personnel had a close call when a partial roof
collapse occurred while firefighters were evacuating the residence.
Fire investigators have determined the fire was incendiary, and the investigation is ongoing.
Fire crews were still on scene as of Monday morning, putting out hot spots.
