BROCTON, Ill. (WAND) -- A woman was killed after a vehicle driving in the opposite direction hit a deer that flew into her windshield.

The crash happened at 8:43 Sunday night on Illinois Highway 49, about two and a half miles south of Brocton.

The Edgar County Coroner said Heidi N. Rothermel, 36, of Brocton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Edgar County Sheriff's Department said the accident happened when a southbound vehicle with three people inside hit a deer. The force of the collision caused the deer to be thrown into the path and through the windshield of Rothermel's northbound vehicle.

Rothermel's car continued down the road for a short distance before coming to a stop in a field on the east side of the road.

The three people in the other vehicle were not hurt.
