MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Macon County Health Department announced the first mosquito batch testing positive for West Nile virus.Â
The batch was collected by the Macon Mosquito Abatement District from a gravid mosquito trap.Â
There are no human cases of West Nile virus in Macon County. The first human case of the year in Illinois was recently confirmed in southern Illinois.Â
Mosquitos are attracted to standing water, bare skin, and dark clothing. To protect yourself, empty standing water ever 5-7 days, wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Make sure to apply bug spray.Â
