The Clinton Fire Department announced that Ameren crews have stopped the leak and gas levels are safe enough for residents to re-enter their homes.
CLINTON, Ill. (WAND) — The Clinton Fire Department announced that a gas line break has caused gas to leak into the sewer system.
The break, which occurred at Jackson Street and Main Street, is being worked on by firefighters and gas crews. Approximately 100 people have been evacuated due to the gas finding its way into nearby homes and businesses.
The department said that anyone affected by the leak will be contacted directly by Ameren or fire crews if evacuation is necessary.
The DeWitt County Courthouse is being used as a meeting place for those who have been displaced.
