SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Governor JB Pritzker is issuing a statement following the US Supreme Court sending former President Donald Trump's immunity case back to the lower court.
In a historic ruling, the justices said Monday for the first time that former presidents can be shielded from prosecution for at least some of what they do in the Oval Office. But rather than do it themselves, the justices ordered lower courts to figure out precisely how to apply the decision to Trump’s case.
Governor Pritzker said, “No person, not even a president, ought to be above the law. SCOTUS today left open that possibility. When Trump tried to overturn the results of an election he lost in 2020, it was not the official act of a president. It was the act of a despotic narcissist attempting to overthrow our democracy to cling to power, and he needs to answer for his actions.”
