TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) – The Illinois EPA is taking action after receiving recent complaints from residents in the City of Taylorville regarding work conducted at the Ameren CIPS Taylorville Superfund site.

Illinois EPA representatives visited the site Friday, September 29, after receiving initial complaints of an odor and returned on Monday, October 2, and Wednesday, October 4, after additional odor complaints were made.

The Illinois EPA staff documented odors at the site and offsite. In response to these findings, Illinois EPA formally requested, and Ameren agreed, to immediately shut down the in situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) pilot project at the Ameren CIPS Taylorville Site.

According to the Illinois EPA, the work stoppage is in accordance with a December 27, 1993 consent decree addressing contamination at the site, and will continue until they have time to review and evaluate air monitoring data that has recently been submitted to the Agency.

Illinois EPA informs that if any odors continue, Ameren CIPS will be required to undertake any necessary actions to address those odors to the extent possible.
