CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) — A person was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after their dog was found neglected, and eventually died, in Sangamon County Friday morning.
The Chatham Police Department said officers responded to a home in the 2000 block of Covered Bridge Road just before 10:30 a.m. for a report of animal abuse.
When they arrived, police said the caller was on scene and told police a dog was inside the home and confined to a small area, surrounded by feces and urine, in "skin and bones" condition.
Officers made entry into the home, where they said an adult dog was found inside who appeared to be severely neglected and without proper care for an extended period of time.
According to the police department, the dog was taken to a veterinarian for emergency care but died shortly after its weight was taken.
Just after 2 p.m., Chatham police made contact with the dog's owner, 43-year-old Laurie Fuchs, at a home in Southern View, Illinois. Fuchs was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
