MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — Six people were displaced after their home caught fire in Mattoon Friday morning.
According to the Mattoon Fire Department, firefighters responded just after 9 a.m. to a basement fire in a home near the intersection of Edgar Avenue and South 7th Street.
Crews arrived and found a two-story home with smoke coming from the back. The department said everyone made it out safely, but residents told firefighters that a dog was still inside.
The dog did eventually come out of hiding and was safely taken out of the home.
The fire department said the fire was considered under control at 9:20 a.m. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental and electric-related.
Six people were displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross. Nobody was hurt during the fire.
