Champaign County Sheriff's Office shares details from Speeding Awareness Day detail

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Champaign County Sheriff's Office released details from its Speeding Awareness Day detail.

Speeding Awareness Day, which was on July 22, was a day many Illinois law enforcement agencies focused extra attention toward speeding violations.

The sheriff's office said deputies, both on routine patrol and through a special speed-enforcement detail, issued:

8 written warnings for speeding
6 traffic citations for speeding 11-14 mph over the speed limit
9 traffic citations for speeding 15-20 mph over the speed limit
1 traffic citation for speeding 21-25 mph over the speed limit

"We dedicate resources to speeding enforcement because speeding is one of the main contributors to motor vehicle crashes," Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said. "Speed kills. Vehicles traveling at slower speeds have better ability to quickly react to avoid hitting a person or other obstacle that enters their direction of travel - especially unexpectedly."
