DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Heartland CASA is expanding its volunteer training opportunities this summer and fall to recruit more advocates for children in foster care across central Illinois.
According to Heartland CASA Executive Director Blaine Smith, 256 children are currently waiting for a volunteer.
Smith said the volunteer shortage is having a major impact on children in foster care.
"These kids are our future. If we don't do something as a community to take care of the kids that need us the most, the most vulnerable population in our society," Smith said. "What will our future look like? What will their future look like?"
The first training class begins later this month, and a limited window remains to recruit volunteers who can make a lasting impact in a child's life.
