SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is currently tracking a black bear that was reported in St. Clair County, Illinois.
Â
A bear was first spotted on Monday and confirmed by wildlife biologists.
Â
According to the IDNR the bear has shown no harmful interactions with humans but has damaged bee hives. IDNR notes that black bear sightings, while rare, may increase as neighboring states like Missouri and Wisconsin have established populations.
Â
Residents are advised to take precautions to avoid attracting bears, as they have a keen sense of smell for food sources.
Â
Bears are omnivores that seek diverse diets and may be seen roaming for food during early summer. Though bear sightings can be unique experiences, IDNR states its essential to treat them as wild animals and not as threats.
Â
Â
IDNR suggests that human conflicts with bears can be prevented by following these Bear Wise basics and by using the BearWise checklist:Â
- Never feed or approach bears.
- Secure food, garbage, and recycling.
- Remove or limit use of bird feeders when bears are active.
- Avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
- Thoroughly clean and store grills and smokers after each use.
- Alert neighbors to bear activity.
People who encounter a bear should give the animal sufficient space while backing away slowly and quietly.
