SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) students and staff are playing a role behind the scenes of a historic sports milestone.

Members of the UIS athletic training program are providing medical and athletic training services to Women's Pro Baseball League (WPBL) players.

UIS said students are helping with injury prevention, mobility and recovery.

"This is an incredible hands-on learning opportunity for our students to work with professional athletes and see firsthand what it takes to provide athletic training services in a competitive environment," said Celest Weuve, director of the UIS program, in a statement.

The season began Aug. 1, the first time professional women's baseball has returned in over 70 years.

More information about the program is available online.
