Urbana City Council debates future of old Civic Center

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Urbana City Council faced a heated debate over the future of the old Urbana Civic Center on Monday.

Urbana aldermen are considering a plan to designate the building as a historic landmark.

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District planned to tear down the building to build a new transportation hub.

MTD officials said a consultant reviewed the building's history and found it was already set for demolition.

However, the Historic Preservation Commission stated that it was never consulted about the plan.
