NORMAL, Ill. (WAND) — This week, it was announced that electric vehicle (EV) maker Rivian would be using money from a $1.5 billion incentive package to invest in its Normal facility and add 550 employees over the next five years.
The move is expected to bring a huge economic boost to the central Illinois economy.

“This is one of the biggest probably in the state right now. Especially with an expansion project bringing in another $1.5 billion on top of the $2 billion they’ve already invested,” said Patrick Hoban, CEO of the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council. “They’re talking over 8,400 employees now. So those are jobs that ripple through the community. It’s more people to buy our homes, shop in our stores and eat in our restaurants.”
Since Rivian opened in Normal in 2021 it has produced more than 100,000 electric vehicles including trucks and Amazon delivery vans.
