DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Although the inflation rate has been declining, Americans age 50 and older are still struggling to pay bills. This usually means they have to cut expenses and frequently they cut medical expenses to make it to the next check.

Dr. Jeff Kullgren, Director of the National Poll on Healthy Aging at the University of Michigan, says inflation has had a negative impact on older individuals this past year.

“In the last year about fifty-percent of people said they had to cut back on their spending,” Dr. Kullgren stated. “When people go without preventative care, or they go without routine care for chronic conditions like diabetes, that can lead to more health problems in the future.”

Dr. Kullgren suggests if you can’t pay your bills, work with your medical care provider to see if there is a lower cost treatment plan. Some providers may also be able to connect you with a payment assistance program.
