Snowy Capitol views in Springfield 1/5/2025

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois State Police have told drivers not to travel on Sunday as they have activated their Emergency Snow Plan.

There is a "no tow" order in effect, meaning if your vehicle is stuck and is not an immediate hazard to other drivers, it will be left on the side of the road or in a ditch until it is determined safe to remove the vehicle.

ISP said that due to the conditions, vehicles will probably be stuck until Monday.

First responders will take you to a safe location if you are stranded.

They said it is imperative to slow down and move over. They added that you should drive slowly; even the speed limit can be too fast in the conditions. You must move over and slow down if you see an emergency vehicle.

During the snow emergency, ISP said only personal injury and significant crashes would be completed. Any derivable property damage crashes would be filed later.

They add that if it is a single-vehicle crash with no injuries on interstate highways or routes under ISP's jurisdiction, the report can be filed online. Those involved in other crashes must contact law enforcement to make a report.
