Lake Land College

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - Lake Land College is unveiling a new strategic plan, "Education that Fits Your Life."

The plan is meant to reshape how students access and experience higher education. It lays the groundwork for new college-wide initiatives the provide students with personalized support and help them balance their academic goals with their personal lives by providing more "customer-centric" schedules.

The "Education that Fits Your Life" plan was developed through direct feedback received in the spring of 2025 from students to address specific needs. That feedback, along with research on national demographic and enrollment trends, led college leaders to identify ways to enhance the student experience.

The plan will prioritize personalized student support, streamlined enrollment processes and increased flexibility to ensure student success.

For the first phase of the plan, college leadership will engage in conversations with employees and students, gathering feedback to create a roadmap to achieve the plan's objectives.

Years ago, Lake Land College was one of the trailblazers in distance learning and online class options. The college has recently developed innovative class formats like Tech 2 Day and Flex Tech. Recent accomplishments include the implementation of evening-only classes and open-entry scheduling in programs like HVAC as well as a 12-month continuous hybrid format in programs like nursing and EMS. The college also recently became a national leader in co-requisite remediation, an approach to remedial education that provides students with support in topics like math and English without slowing them down by enrolling them in non-credit bearing courses.

The development of the new plan is a proactive move by Lake Land College to address national trends regarding higher education. Colleges across the country are seeing a decline in enrollment with more high school graduates choosing to skip higher education and immediately enter the workforce.
