SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Two years have passed since the groundbreaking was held at the Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe. The Springfield Clinic Dome was inflated in June, and Tuesday, WAND News got the chance to look inside.

The dome is 189,000 square feet. It is almost 100 feet tall, nearly 250 feet wide, and over 700 feet long.

"We have basketball and volleyball, we have batting cages that also do golf simulation," said General Manager of Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe, Brandon Doherty. "And the turf field, really we could do whatever we want, which is two full-size softball fields, we could do a full-size soccer field or a football field ... we do plan on doing at least two to three events on a weekend or even during the week in the dome at one time."

Doherty said they are still waiting to get official word on the dome's capacity. He estimates they will be able to hold 3,000 to 4,000. The dome does not have permanent seating, so bleachers will be moved around the space depending on where games are being played.

"For families within the community, it gives them a chance to stay in the community and then in turn, they get these great experiences where now they have more family members engaged, they have more community businesses engaged, we have more of everything engaged," Doherty said.

The first event will be held inside the dome on the first weekend of November, as the team opens the area space by space. The entire facility is scheduled to be open by Spring 2026.

"We've got over 100 tournaments planned over the next year in multiple locations at once," Doherty said. "The kids ... they're going to see people from different sides of the state, the region and even the country bringing elevated styles of play, and it just creates more competition."

Right now, they are looking to hire part-time workers to staff the space as they prepare to open. They are holding an event on Wednesday to hire people for multiple positions. You can also apply online.
