SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch has called for Rep. Harry Benton to resign following the results of an ethics investigation into sexual harassment allegations.Â
"The Legislative Inspector General's findings reveal clear patterns of conduct by Representative Benton that are outrageous, unethical and unbecoming of a member of the Illinois House of Representatives," Welch said in a statement Wednesday.Â
Benton was previously removed from the House Democratic Caucus and has also lost his committee roles.Â
Welch added that he called for Benton's "immediate resignation" and will work to expel him from the House if he refuses.Â
Benton's office told WAND News that he is still in his position as representative, but had nothing else to add.Â
WAND also called his personal cell phone but did not get a response.Â
