SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — While the over 50 acre plot of dirt behind Scheels might not seem like much, a lot of work has happened in the lot since the groundbreaking occurred a year ago. Construction crews have laid more than two miles of underground piping, set up electrical wires for overhead lights, and built drainage systems for the outdoor fields.

Soon crews will start building the foundation of the building and prepare to place the dome. A new General Manager was added to the Sports Park team today. Brandon Doherty will lead the facilities team for the rest of the construction, and when the building is completed.

"I'm excited to be here because I know how a sports park like this will bring the community together and really make a solid impact on the community," said Doherty. "People want to be able to come to a nice facility that's safe and functional."

By the beginning of the 2025 school year, athletes will be able to play baseball, softball, football, and soccer outside and play basketball, volleyball, and soccer inside the dome.

The Sports Park isn't the only area near Scheels with ongoing construction. Slightly South, located between the Springhill Suites and I-72 is the framework for a new hotel. The Fairfield Inn and Suites is expected to be completed by Spring of 2025.

"We believe that the Legacy Pointe area will offer our guests excellent entertainment options and ensure they have a positive experience," said Darin Dame, co-owner of Legacy Hospitality. "The hotel will feature 91 rooms, a pool, and various amenities tailored for both families and business travelers"

Scott Dahl, Director of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the area will continue to see more development, as restaurants and hotels see the influx the new sports facility brings. While Springfield has seen 3 consecutive years of record tourism profits, he hopes the new facility will continue to drive that number up.

"In 2026 we're looking to host national tournaments, regional tournaments, and working with sports facilities companies on bookings. many tournaments," said Dahl. "Thirty million dollars a year, 250,000 new visitors ... We're excited about it."

The Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe is expected to be completed by Fall 2025, with the first tournaments planned to begin in Spring 2026.
