New grocery store to open in Farmer City after a decade

FARMER CITY, Ill. (WAND) - Farmer City in DeWitt County lost its last grocery store over a decade ago. Now it appears the town of nearly 2,000 will have a place to shop for food once again.

Five years ago, a group of people, aged 40 and under, decided to come up with ideas that would appeal to younger individuals moving into the community. The top two ideas were more daycare and a grocery store.

Now, a building on the Farmer City square is being renovated into a new grocery store. The total price will run around $320,000. A private donation paid for the purchase of the building, and the city has kicked in $100,000. People in the community can become part owners by contributing $100.

Curt Homann is the executive director of the DeWitt County Development Council. He told WAND News the store should be completed and ready to open late this year or early 2027.

The name will be Farm to City Harvest Store.
