Champaign City Council rejects food truck commissary kitchen plan

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign City Council narrowly rejected a plan for a food truck commissary kitchen Tuesday night.

Food truck owner Louis Salgado had requested a special use permit to build the commissary.

The idea would have allowed small food trucks a commercial space to prepare food for the day, and no items would be sold on site.

However, some neighbors shared concerns about the smell, noise and high traffic the project could bring.

"My concern is that I am not willing to have all these trucks running in and out at all times of the day and night," said one resident.

Salgado said he grew up two blocks from the property and was committed to restricted hours, noise limits and air filters.

Some council members shared they are concerned the building will now stand vacant and could hurt local property values.
