SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield City Council named Sen. Doris Turner to the Mid-Illinois Medical District Commission Wednesday night.
The district is a one-square-mile designation north of downtown.
The commission is responsible for maintaining the area for the four healthcare centers in Springfield and attracting new clinics and research facilities to the area.
"I have always had a passion and worked very hard in health care and providing access to affordable, reliable health care," Turner said.
Turner said with the expansion of the district, she sees opportunities for economic benefits to the City of Springfield.
She hopes to focus on housing for those who work in the district.
