VERMILION CO., Ill. (WAND) - A 44-year-old Georgetown man was found guilty last month in connection with a 2023 burglary in Vermilion County.
Following a jury trial, Brett McGehee was convicted June 23 of burglary, a Class 2 felony.
According to prosecutors, evidence presented at trial showed the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department was called Sept. 12, 2023, for a report of a burglary.
Prosecutors said the victim reported that she and her husband followed a truck from their property on Newell Road to a recycling business after the people inside the truck allegedly stole several items from the victims’ garage.
McGehee and a co-defendant, Gustavo Vargas, claimed they had been hired by someone to clean up the property where the items were taken. Investigators checked the contact information provided by the men for the alleged person who hired them, but prosecutors said it was found to be invalid.
McGehee is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 7, 2026.
Vargas was sentenced Aug. 7, 2025, to 24 months of Second Chance Probation for burglary.
The trial was presided over by Judge Karen Wall.
“We thank the jury for their careful service,” Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline M. Lacy said. “This guilty verdict holds the defendant accountable for a serious crime, and we hope the victims feel a sense of closure.”
