SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum has acquired a collection of documents and artifacts from a Springfield-based company.
The company made tents for the military, Hollywood and America’s fairs and circuses for 150 years.
Highlights from the Armbruster Manufacturing Collection are now on display at the museum.
Armbruster Manufacturing was founded in 1875 and began by creating canvas covers for the Conestoga wagons used by westward pioneers. Over the years it moved into producing tents for state fairs, movie sets, circus companies, and military operations.
The business closed earlier this year. President Hellar Armbruster donated the company archives to the people of Illinois.
“We are thrilled to add the Armbruster Manufacturing collection to the museum,” said Christina Shutt, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “This Illinois story showcases the innovation, resilience, and community spirit that defines our state.”
The exhibit includes photographs and artifacts. Visitors will see tools of the trade, as well as products that were created, sold, or rented by the company. Highlights include a wooden folding chair, collapsible feed bucket, antique pulleys, industrial size sewing machine, company stencil and a campers’ guidebook. The exhibit runs through April 8, 2025.
"When we made the decision to close, it was important to us to preserve our company’s rich history,” said Hellar Armbruster. “Trusting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum with our legacy was an easy choice, and we’re grateful for the work they’re doing to share our story with future generations."
“Through this collection, visitors can experience the tools, products, and stories that defined Armbruster Manufacturing,” said ALPLM Chief of Acquisitions Ian Hunt. “We are grateful to Hellar Armbruster and his family for sharing these treasures, which bring the company’s rich history to life.”
The exhibit, located outside the museum’s “Ghosts of the Library” show, is included with regular museum admission.
