Many districts struggle to find enough teachers

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND)- Millikin University welcomed dozens of prospective education students Monday, amid a statewide teacher shortage.

“The last I saw, we have 1,400 unfilled teaching positions in our state,” said Christie Magoulias, director of Millikin’s Education School. “We need teachers, and I think there’s a lot happening right now that makes it an exciting time to be thinking about education.”

Eighty-three high schoolers from around Illinois attended the annual “Tomorrow’s Teachers” event. The event includes sessions on specific content areas along with team-building activities and more.

“The goal today is to help these students see what teaching is like, what being an education major is like, being in the college classroom, being comfortable there, and understanding that when you get a license to teach, there are many career choices ahead,” Magoulias said.

Students who participate in the event qualify for a $2,000 Millikin scholarship.
