CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A Champaign student has been arrested for trying to bring a gun into Central High School.
The Champaign Police Department told WAND News that a school resource officer was contacted by school security after a metal detector alerted at the school's entrance Friday morning as students were arriving.Â
A 16-year-old student was detained by school security while a search was conducted of his bag. A gun was found during that search, police say.
The student was placed under arrest, and Champaign Police opened an investigation.Â
"Because this is an ongoing investigation related to the arrest of a juvenile, Champaign Police are unable to provide additional details on this incident. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," Champaign Police said.Â
WAND News also reached out to the school district for a statement on this incident. In response, the district sent the letter that was sent out to parents.Â
Dear Central H.S. Families, Students and Staff,
Today (11/15/24) during student arrival, the Evolv System alerted staff that a metal object was in a backpack. Security staff checked the bag and saw a gun in the bag. The bag was given to a security officer and school administrator who took the bag to the Assistant Principal’s office. The Champaign Police Department School Resource Officer secured the bag and weapon. CPD has interviewed and arrested the student.
Because the system worked, the student did not pass the entryway with the weapon. There was no need for a lockdown and school continues on its normal schedule.
Unit 4 Schools is taking this matter seriously and it will be addressed in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The safety and security of every student and staff member is always a high priority. We will continue to work with our families, law enforcement and our community to ensure safe learning environments.
Sincerely,
Champaign Unit 4 Schools
