SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A suspect was shot by police after officers said he shot someone and held another person hostage at the Sangamon County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Springfield Police were called for an active shooter incident at the facility at 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

Police were told the suspect was armed, had shot someone and was holding someone else hostage.

When officers arrived, they found the armed suspect at the entrance to the facility.

A Springfield Police officer fired at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken to HSHS St. John's Hospital where he later died. A second person was treated for a gunshot wound and was treated and released.

The Illinois State Police are handling the investigation. The officers involved have been placed on restricted duty, per policy.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said that the person who died was a 17-year-old boy whose identity is being kept confidential at this time. Preliminary findings from an autopsy conducted on Monday suggest he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
