MAHOMET, Ill. (WAND) - Sleep in Heavenly Peace - Mahomet is celebrating a milestone, delivering more than 1,000 beds to children across central Illinois over the past two and a half years.
Since launching in 2024, the Mahomet chapter has helped children and families across Mahomet, Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Rantoul, and other communities.
"Reaching 1,000 bed deliveries is an incredible accomplishment, especially in under 3 years. We would really like to thank the community because without them hundreds of kids would still be sleeping on the floor today," said Larry Uphoff, Chapter President of Sleep in Heavenly Peace – Mahomet. "Every bed represents a child whose life has been changed because people chose to volunteer, donate, or simply care."
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit organization that delivers handmade beds to children ages 3–17 who do not have one of their own. Each child receives a new bed frame, a brand-new mattress, pillow, and bedding.
You can help their mission by:
- Volunteering at community bed-building events. Our next bed build and bedding donation drive will be September 12, 2026 in the Champaign Lowes parking lot.
- Helping deliver beds to local families.
- Donating new twin-size bedding, pillows and mattress
- Making financial contributions to help purchase mattresses and building materials.
- Sponsoring bed builds through businesses, churches, civic groups, or community organizations.
"There’s still work to do," Uphoff said. "Until every child has a safe, comfortable place to sleep, we'll continue building one bed at a time. We invite everyone in our community to join us at our Bunks Across America build in September”.
